What You Need to Know About Shade at Yankee Stadium
A summer day in the Bronx can be brutal, and with Yankee Stadium’s open-air design, the difference between an enjoyable game and a grueling one comes down to your row number. Here is how to navigate the shadows at “The House That George Built.”
The “Grandstand” Guarantee
The 400 level is arguably the best value in the park for shade. Because the stadium features a massive, cantilevered roof at the very top, the highest seats are the best protected from the sun.
-
Row 6 and higher: If you sit in rows 6 through 14 of the Grandstand level, you are almost guaranteed to be in the shade for the entire game. These sections also catch a much-needed breeze that rarely reaches the lower levels of the stadium.
Stick to 1st Base
While many stadiums favor the third base side for shade, Yankee Stadium is the opposite as it faces East. For a 1:05 PM game, the sun is positioned in a way that the first base grandstands begin to cast shadows almost immediately. By mid-game, much of the first base line is protected, while fans on the third base side and in the left-field bleachers face the sun head-on for all nine innings.
For night games, however, the sun starts to set on the third-base side, making first base more sunny.
The 200-Level Overhang Strategy
The 200 level (Main Level) offers excellent views and significant protection if you choose the right seats.
-
Row 16 is the “Magic Row”: In sections 205–217 and 223–234, row 16 marks the start of the overhang provided by the 300-level deck above. If you sit in row 16 or higher, you are shielded from both the sun and potential rain.
-
Sections 217 and 223: These sections behind home plate are highly recommended. Not only are they shaded, but they are conveniently located near high-quality craft beer stations and bathrooms, making for an easy, cool game-day experience.
Premium and Field-Level Relief
If you want to be closer to the action, your options for shade are limited to the very back of the 100 level.
-
Field Level Rows 26–30: The last five rows of the field level are tucked under the overhang of the 200 level. These seats offer a great perspective while keeping you out of the direct glare.
-
Field MVP Section 115–125: The very last rows in these sections are part of a premium area that includes padded seats and waiter service. If budget isn’t an issue, this is the most comfortable way to stay in the shade on the field level.
Areas to Avoid
There are two areas you should avoid at all costs during a day game as the heat can be intense:
-
The 300 Level (Terrace): These seats are “out in the open” and receive almost zero protection from the stadium structure. You will be in the sun from the first pitch until the sun finally sets behind the stadium.
-
Left Field Bleachers: The left field side faces the sun all afternoon. Unless you enjoy a heavy tan with your baseball, stay toward the right field or home plate areas.
By sticking to the first base side and targeting the shaded rows in the 200 or 400 levels, you can stay cool while cheering on the Yanks. Enjoy the game!
