What You Need to Know About Shade at Camden Yards
Oriole Park at Camden Yards is often called “The Ballpark That Forever Changed Baseball,” but in the peak of a Baltimore July, it can feel like a brick-and-steel oven. To enjoy the game without the threat of heatstroke, you have to play the angles of the sun as carefully as a right fielder plays the warehouse wall.
The Terrace Level Secret
For shade, the most important terms to know at Camden Yards are Terrace Level and odd numbers! The lower bowl is split into two parts by a walkway. The front sections is the Field Level (even numbers) and the back sections is the Terrace level (odd numbers).
-
The 6-to-12 Rule: For the perfect balance of shade and visibility, target rows 6 through 12 in the Terrace Level. Rows 1 through 5 are often in the sun during the first few innings, while rows higher than 15 are deeply shaded but can have a “letterboxed” view where the upper deck blocks your sight of the scoreboard and high popups.
-
The Press Box Draft: If you can snag a seat in the back rows of sections 39 or 41, you’ll benefit from one of the stadium’s best accidents: the air-conditioned press box sits right above you, and as media members move in and out, you’ll occasionally catch a heavenly draft of 70-degree air.
The Upper Deck
If you prefer a bird’s-eye view, the 300 level is surprisingly hospitable, provided you choose your row wisely.
Target Rows 15+ in the 300 level. The stadium roof provides a massive umbrella for the top ten rows of the upper deck. If you sit in row 15 or higher on the third base side, you’ll be in the shade for almost the entire game.
By prioritizing the odd side and staying within the shaded rows of the Terrace or Upper Deck, you can focus on the box score instead of the thermometer.
