What You Need to Know About Shade at Nationals Park

Washington D.C. in July is famously humid, and Nationals Park can feel like a concrete oven if you’re caught in the direct sun. Unlike older parks, “Nats Park” was built with wide-open concourses that allow for great views, but often at the cost of shade. If you want to survive a 1:05 PM or 4:05 PM game without a case of heat exhaustion, choosing your section is the most important part of your ticket purchase.

Look For Seats on the 3rd Base Line

If you are attending an afternoon game, your search should begin and end on the third-base side. By 2:30 PM, the sun has moved behind the stadium structure on this side, casting a massive shadow across the lower and middle bowls.

Sections 110 through 117 are the primary targets. However, if you sit in the first 10 rows, you will still be in the sun for the start of the game. To be safe from the first pitch, aim for the “double letter” rows (AA and higher) which are protected by the mezzanine above.

  • Sections 110 – 177B: These are the primary targets for lower-level seating. However, if you sit in the first 10 rows, you will still be in the sun for the start of the game. To be safe from the first pitch, aim for the “double letter” rows (AA and higher) which are protected by the mezzanine above.
  • Best Value is the Left Field Mezzanine: For many Nats fans, the best bang-for-your buck is the Left Field Mezzanine. These sections are almost entirely shaded for afternoon games because of the upper-deck overhang. They offer an elevated view of the field and usually catch a better breeze than the lower bowl. Local fans specifically suggest Section 204, Row H or higher as a “perfection zone” for staying dry during rain or cool during a heatwave.
  • Club Level Seating (Section 206 – 221): If the forecast calls for 95 degrees and high humidity, the Club Level on the third base side is worth the extra cost. While the seats themselves are only shaded in the back half of the section, these tickets grant you entry into the climate-controlled indoor club.
  • Section 401 – 409: Don’t overlook the “cheap seats.” The 400 level behind home plate and down the third-base line is covered by the stadium’s primary roof. Sections 401 to 409 provide guaranteed shade for the highest rows. While you’re high up, you’ll have a panoramic view of the Capitol building and the river, all while staying comfortably out of the sun’s reach.
