What You Need to Know About Shade at Citi Field

Attending a day game at Citi Field in July can be really miserable if you aren’t at the right spot. Because of the stadium’s open design, the sun hits the field and the first base line with intensity for hours. If you want to enjoy the game comfortably, you have to be tactical about where you sit!

Stick to the 3rd Base Side

For Citi Field, the sun typically moves from behind right field, curves around home plate at midday, and sets behind the third-base stands. This makes third base the primary shade side for afternoon games.

  • Sections 121 – 126: For an afternoon game, it may take until the middle innings for the shade to reach the lower rows, but the back rows should keep you protected throughout due to the Excelsior Level overhang.

  • The Excelsior Level Sections 326 – 333 : This level is widely considered the best overall for shade because the 400-level deck acts as a massive umbrella for almost the entire tier. You can also look for sections 316–322 behind home plate which is the Piazza Club.

  • Promenade Level Sections 400 & 500: These sections are almost fully protected by the stadium’s primary roof canopy, but row depth is key to staying out of the sun. To guarantee shade from the roof, sit in row 10 or higher. The front rows (1–5) of the upper deck are often still exposed to the sun’s angle during the early parts of afternoon games.

  • The “Hidden Gem” (Coca-Cola Corner Overhang): While the outfield is usually a “burn zone,” a few specific sections in right field are shielded by the large “Coca-Cola Corner” porch above them. Aim for sections 101 – 103 in the upper rows for best coverage.

For night games at Citi Field, the sun is less of a factor, but the glare can be brutal for the first few innings. For 7:10 PM starts in mid-summer, the sun sets behind the third-base side. This means fans in right field and the 1st base line will spend the first hour of the game squinting directly into the sunset. To avoid the glare, stay on the third-base side.
