What You Need to Know About Shade at Progressive Field
Progressive Field is a beloved ballpark for Guardians fans, with classic seating bowls, views of the Cleveland skyline, and comfortable concourses helping make a summer baseball game a fun experience. It truly is one of the best views in baseball.
The stadium’s North orientation means the sun rises over right field and moves across the field during afternoon games, which can leave large portions of the lower bowl, especially down the first-base line, exposed to intense sunlight for many innings.
If you’re heading to a day game in the summer heat, choosing your seat wisely will dramatically impact how comfortable you are and how long you’re in direct sun.
Favor the 3rd Base Side for Shade
The third-base side is generally the shade side during day games. First-base and right-field seats remain exposed to sun much longer, while the third-base line and behind home plate begin to see relief earlier as shadows extend.
This pattern makes a noticeable difference especially for early-afternoon games (1:10 or 1:40 PM first pitches). Sitting closer to the field without shade might look great, but you’ll be absorbing sunlight instead of enjoying the action.
Look For These Sections
Shade isn’t everywhere at Progressive Field. It’s concentrated where overhangs, roof edges, and stadium structure cast consistent shadows. These spots are the best bets:
- Field Level Sections 156 – 174: These seats are toward the third-base side and fans report that once you move up into the upper rows here, the overhang keeps you shaded for much of a day game.
- Behind Home Plate Sections 152 – 155: These sections sit behind home plate where overhangs begin to break direct sunlight earlier than outfield areas. These are the best seats for comfort without sacrificing view.
- Sections 453 – 459: The back of the 400s benefits from the roof/upper deck, and these sections are a reliable choice for shade even if a game starts in bright sun.
- Sections 553 – 567: The 500s are the highest tier and their last few rows are shaded by the overhang/roof edge, making them among the most consistently shaded in the stadium. This is especially true for the afternoon starts.
Timing Notes: Afternoon vs Evening
Evening games make shade less of a concern because the sun lowers and shadows extend across more of the bowl.
For afternoon games, however, you’ll want to prioritize vertical elevation and sections on the third-base side or behind home plate to get the earliest relief possible.
