What You Need to Know About Shade at Comerica Park
Comerica Park’s classic open design is a fan favorite. Great sightlines, Detroit skyline views, a huge outfield, and spaces like the Tiger Den makes it a must-see ballpark.
But that openness also means the sun hits large parts of the lower bowl hard during early and mid-afternoon games. This is especially true on the third-base side and in left field. If you want relief from the sun at Comerica Park, you need to think about both which side of the field and how high up you sit.
Stick to 1st Base
Comerica Park faces Southeast, so the sun is high above right field early on. It then moves toward the first-base line as the game progresses, leaving seats down the third-base line and in left field in direct sun for most of the afternoon.
The further you are down the third-base line or in left field, the longer you’ll be exposed without much structural shade. So try and stick to the first-base side for the best shade.
Top Picks: The Best Sections for Shade
Shade at Comerica Park is all about overhangs and elevation, and these areas are best areas to provide relief:
- Sections 112–119: These seats are between first base and the right-field foul pole, and rows toward the back benefit from the overhang of the mezzanine above. They’re often shaded early or have the sun at your back as the afternoon progresses.
- Tiger Den Sections 120 – 130: These seats are part of the Tiger Den and Terrace areas along the first base line. These are often shaded or have significant relief as shadows extend, especially in the upper rows under the overhang.
- Mezzanine Sections 210 – 219: Mid-tier infield seats on the first base side shade later in afternoon games as shadows move across the stadium. An affordable shade-friendly option with a good view.
- Upper Box Sections 321 – 330: Higher sections in the 300s get shade sooner and are often shaded for most of the game thanks to the upper deck’s roof edge.
- Upper Grandstand as a last resort: If the other sections are unavailable, the Upper Grandstand on the third-base set can be a good alternative, especially later on in the afternoon.
Afternoon vs Evening Games
Keep in mind, for early afternoon games (around 1:10 PM) only a handful of shaded spots exist early. Most shade comes from overhangs or high elevation. As the game moves later in the afternoon, the sun shifts and the first-base and right-field side gets more relief, while evening games with later start times see shade spread more uniformly across the bowl.
