What You Need to Know About Shade at Kauffman Stadium
Kansas City summers are notoriously hot and humid, and Kauffman Stadium’s orientation means the sun can be relentless in certain areas. At a 3:00 PM start, much of the lower bowl is exposed until shadows arrive late in the game, so knowing where shade tends to fall helps make your visit more comfortable.
Shade is Best on 3rd Base
Unlike parks with heavy structural shade, much of Kauffman’s lower bowl stays in direct sun during the first half of an afternoon game.
Because the stadium faces slightly Northeast, the sun arcs from behind centerfield toward third base, meaning you’ll find shade earliest on the third-base side of the upper levels and in seats protected by the decks above.
- Sections 211 – 225 on 3rd Base Side: In the mid-tier bowl, higher rows start seeing shade earlier in the afternoon as shadows fall from the upper deck. This zone balances proximity to the field with better shade timing than most lower sections.
-
Loge Level Sections 301 – 311: These seats are tucked under the upper deck, offering one of the most reliable shaded experiences at Kauffman Stadium. Whether it’s an early afternoon or late afternoon game, this area stays out of direct sun far longer than most lower bowl seats.
-
View Outfield Sections 403 – 407: The highest sections benefit from roof and structure shading. These sections can actually be some of the most comfortable for sunny day games.
- View Reserved Levels: Most seats in these upper levels are shaded and under cover from the roof overhang. When in doubt, however, stick to the third-base side
If you want to get 100-level seats, stick to third base. Due to the sun’s positioning in the afternoon, most of these seats won’t get shade until the middle of the game. If you need, stick to the higher rows to get the overhang.
Late Afternoon or Evening Game Shade
For later game, shade becomes more widespread across the ballpark as the sun lowers. Seats that are in direct sun early will begin to see noticeable relief, particularly on the third-base side and deeper into the upper levels. Even so, positions under overhangs and higher elevation seating still offer the most consistent comfort as the day progresses.
