What You Need to Know About Shade at Target Field

Target Field is one of baseball’s more open ballparks, offering sweeping skyline views and an expansive feel that makes afternoon games feel bright and lively.

That openness comes with a trade-off as direct sunlight can linger across large portions of the lower bowl without cover. In the early innings of a 1:10 PM or mid-afternoon start, the sun sits high over right field and then moves across toward third base, leaving large swaths of the ballpark exposed unless you’re in a section that benefits from structural shade.

Stay on 1st Base

On the first-base side, shade tends to arrive earlier because of the sun’s path and Target Field’s east-facing direction. Seats close to the field often get baked by the sun early, while the upper rows and Terrace/upper deck benefit from the canopy and gradually shading from the stadium structure.

  • Sections 101 – 117: These sections along the first-base line get shade sooner in afternoon games, especially when seated in the back half of the section where the upper deck overhang begins to provide cover.

  • Sections 301 – 327: The upper deck at Target Field has a significant overhang that blocks direct sun across most of these sections, making them among the most reliable shaded seats for day games. While first base is preferred, there should be plenty of shade and cover at any section.

  • Left Field Bleachers Sections 128 – 131: Though left and center field are exposed to sun longest, these bleacher sections under partial overhang can offer shade later in the game if you choose higher rows.

Shade for Evening Games

As the sun lowers, more sections begin to see natural shade, but first-base line seats and upper deck areas still shade earlier and more consistently throughout the game.

Seats directly down the third-base line and outfield seats typically don’t see meaningful relief until much later or not at all until the sun sets. Higher rows or upper deck is where shade becomes a real factor.
