What You Need to Know About Shade at Angel Stadium
Angel Stadium is an iconic Southern California ballpark where summer sunshine and baseball go hand-in-hand. Its classic open design means there’s not a ton of built-in shade in the lower bowl, but certain areas under upper decks and high-elevation seating do offer meaningful relief when the sun’s intensity peaks.
On hot, bright days, choosing the right tier and row can make a dramatic difference in comfort.
In day games, the sun sits high behind home plate and first base early on, putting much of the lower bowl (especially field level and outfield sections) in direct sunlight for multiple innings. Terrace Level and upper deck back rows provide the most reliable shade for afternoon games thanks to structural overhangs and elevation, while lower bowl seats along the foul lines see sun much longer and outfield seating stays exposed until later in the game.
3rd Base is Best Relief From the Sun
Overhangs on the Terrace and upper deck help cast shadows downward, shading fans in the 200 level and higher levels as the game progresses.
- Terrace Level Sections 201 – 213: These seats are under a structural overhang for most of the afternoon game, making them some of the most consistently shaded in the stadium. While you can look for sections on the first base side, shade will come much later in the afternoon unless you are in the few back rows.
- Field Level Sections 101 – 113: While lower bowl seats often stay in the sun near the field until later in the afternoon, the back rows here sit under the Terrace/200 overhang. While not always guaranteed, you could get shade from first pitch.
- View Level Sections 401 – 421: Elevated seating benefits from both height and partial cover from the upper deck structure. These seats tend to shade earlier than much of the lower bowl, especially in afternoon starts.
- Sections 501 – 522: These upper sections typically start to shade earlier than lower bowl, and the angle of the sun makes the third-base side more comfortable later in the game.
Evening Games and Shade
Evening games are generally far more comfortable shade-wise. As the sun lowers behind the third-base side, shade spreads quickly across most of the seating bowl, especially in the Terrace and upper levels. Even seats that were sun-soaked during afternoon starts experience relief earlier in the game when temperatures drop and shadows move in.
