What You Need to Know About Shade at American Family Field
American Family Field (formerly Miller Park) has one of the more distinctive ballpark designs in MLB, with a retractable roof and large overhangs that can dramatically alter sun exposure depending on roof position and time of day.
Milwaukee summers can be warm and bright, and because the stadium faces southeast, direct sunlight tends to linger across much of the lower bowl in afternoon games. That means shade often comes down to elevation, roof coverage, and which baseline you choose.
How Shade Works at American Family Field
Lower bowl seats down the third-base line and left field are some of the sunniest spots in the park during day games, while the first-base and right-field side consistently has shade earlier and longer, especially where there’s structural cover from overhangs above.
In early innings of afternoon starts (around 1:10 PM), the sun sits high and hits most of the lower bowl directly, especially near third base and left field. As the game progresses, shadows from upper decks and the roof extend across toward the first-base side, meaning fans seated on that side (in the higher rows) enjoy shade much earlier. Upper deck seats and rows under the roof’s overhang often see shade for most of the game, regardless of roof position.
The Best Shaded Sections on 1st Base
- Field Level Sections 106–119: Along the first-base line, these field level seats in the back rows provide good shade later in afternoon games thanks to shadows from the upper level and roof structure.
- Loge Level Sections 206–219: In the Loge / 200 level, these higher rows benefit from the overhang above, offering more consistent shade than lower rows in the same sections.
- Club Level Sections 306 – 335: On the upper deck closer to the roof, these seats are shaded early and often, making them some of the best choices for relief from direct sun.
- Terrace Level Sections 407–425: While the third-base side lower bowl remains sunny longer, these upper rows toward the back of the 400s can get shade as the game progresses due to structural shadows. You can find shade on the first-base side of the Terrace Level, but look for the upper rows. You may be sacrificing a further view from the field, however.
Evening Games and Shade
Evening starts tend to be far more comfortable shade-wise, especially as the sun dips behind the stadium. In these cases, shade spreads quickly across most of the seating bowl, often leaving first-base side seats shaded by first pitch or shortly thereafter.
Third-base and left field areas should begin to see relief around the middle innings as the sun sets.
