What You Need to Know About Shade at Great American Ball Park
Great American Ball Park is one of the more sun-exposed stadiums in MLB because of its southeast orientation. At most afternoon games, the sun starts high over right field, arcs over home plate, and doesn’t fully retreat until late innings.
That means many lower bowl seats, especially down the 3rd base line and in outfield areas, are in direct sunlight for hours unless you’re under a cover or high enough to catch shadows cast by the upper decks.
How Sun and Shadows Move at GABP
Early in an afternoon game, most of the lower level will be sunny, with the bright sun hitting from right field toward left. As the afternoon progresses, shadows begin to form from the upper decks and roof structure, particularly along the first-base side, casting shade downward.
Clubs and overhangs provide the earliest consistent relief, while higher elevations like the upper deck get shade next as shadows grow longer. Even in a late afternoon start, the sun lingers longest in outfield and third-base seats.
Stick to 1st
Shade at Great American Ball Park is concentrated along the first-base side and in covered seating areas, particularly in the Club Level and upper rows that benefit from the overhang
- Sections 127 – 139: The Reds got you covered here! Sections 127 – 136 first-base side are officially designated Humana Shade Seats in rows HH and higher.
- Sections 420 – 437: Higher elevation and the steepness of the bowl help these rows shade earlier than many in the lower tiers, making them a preferred shade and breeze spot.
- Sections 520 – 537: The upper deck’s back rows gain shade as shadows from the upper bowl extend downward, making these seats more comfortable on hot days than many lower bowl options.
- Premium Seating in Sections 1 – 5, 22 – 25, 122 – 126, 301 – 307: If you are looking for better views, premium seating behind home plate and on the 1st base side offer shade in the upper rows at the start of afternoon games

Evening Reds Games and Shade
Evening starts are much more forgiving. As the sun sets behind the first-base side, shade spreads more quickly across the bowl, often leaving first-base line and upper deck seats fully shaded by the early innings.
Outfield and lower third-base line seats still see some day sun early on, but conditions improve as the sun approaches the horizon.
