What You Need to Know About Shade at Globe Life Field
Globe Life Field is a modern retractable-roof ballpark designed to give Texas Rangers fans relief from Arlington’s notorious summer heat and humidity. The stadium’s massive operable roof and bright, airy interior are engineered to keep fans cooler than the old outdoor park.
Because Globe Life Field was built with climate control in mind, the roof does a lot of the heavy lifting. There are plenty of seats that sit under an overhang or is shaded by the structure to make your viewing experience much more relaxing.
How Shade Develops During Day Games
When the roof is open, sunlight still plays a major role in your comfort. The ballpark faces northeast, so in day games the sun rises behind right field, crosses over home plate, and sets toward left field, meaning the highest shade potential moves across the seating bowl over time.
Stick to 3rd Base
With the roof open, early innings at a 1:05 PM or 3:05 PM start can still feel bright, especially along the first-base line and right field, where direct sunlight lingers longest.
Seats further back or under the mezzanine overhang get relief sooner. As the sun dips later in the afternoon, shadows cast from the stadium structure begin to cross the bowl from the third-base side toward home plate, giving fans in those areas significant shade throughout the game.
- Sections 1 – 12 Upper Rows: At field level, the back rows under the overhang receive shade earlier than front rows and can stay out of direct sun for much of the game.
- Sections 103 – 114 Upper Rows: Along the third-base line, higher rows shade well later in afternoon games as shadows grow across the bowl. This side becomes particularly comfortable as the sun transitions toward evening.
-
Sections 205 – 2217 Upper Rows: These upper mezzanine seats are often shaded early thanks to the roof’s structure, giving you relief even in afternoon starts and maintaining comfort through the game.
-
Sections 301 – 314 Upper Rows: The highest seating tiers under the roof are among the most shade-friendly spots in the park. This is especially true for day games when lower levels stay in direct sun longer.
If shade is a priority, avoid lower rows along the first-base line and right field, which stay exposed longer into afternoon games when the roof is open. These areas get the most direct sun and offer the least natural cover, especially early on.
Evening Games in the Texas Heat
Evening starts are the most comfortable shade-wise at Globe Life Field with the roof open.
As the sun lowers, the stadium structure casts shadows more quickly across the lower bowl, particularly on the third-base side and behind home plate, meaning many sections will be shaded by first pitch or shortly thereafter. Covered areas and higher rows often remain shaded throughout the game, making later games ideal for fans sensitive to sun exposure.
