What You Need to Know About Shade at Busch Stadium
Busch Stadium stands out for its classic design, big views of the Arch, and a truly old-school feel. That same openness creates a challenge for day games, however.
Because home plate is oriented East (ENE to be exact) , much of the lower bowl gets direct sun for large portions of afternoon starts, and shade doesn’t sweep across the park in a simple way like at many stadiums.
In this stadium, more than any other, sitting under an overhang or roof is a must for the most shade during a day game.
How Sun and Shade Move at Busch Stadium
On a typical afternoon game with bright sun, the early innings leave most of the lower level exposed, especially down the third-base line and in left field.
As the sun moves toward the horizon, shadows begin to cast from the upper decks toward the 1st base side and behind home plate. Because there is no universal “shade side” year-round, shade timing at Busch Stadium depends heavily on row depth and elevation. The farther back and higher up, the greater the chance of early shade.
Stay in Upper Rows on 1st Base
I’ll say it again, look for upper rows for the best chance at shade during a hot and sunny day.
- Sections 132 – 153 Upper Rows: On the field level, these back rows near structural overhangs start shading sooner than front rows, making them among the better lower bowl options for sun relief during hot day games.
-
Sections 234–253 Upper Rows: These first-base side sections in the 200s are frequently shaded for most of the afternoon game. The back rows often avoid sun far longer than other lower bowl areas.
- Sections 331–353 Upper Rows: Mid-tier seats under the overhang can provide solid shade coverage during day games, especially in back rows where the upper deck blocks direct sun. They’re more shaded earlier than most sections near the field.
- Sections 431 – 451 Upper Rows: The highest seating tier benefits from structural shadows and tends to shade earlier than lower sections. These back rows are among the most reliable shaded seats in the stadium during afternoon starts.
Evening Games and Shade at Busch Stadium
Evening and night starts are more comfortable shade-wise. As the sun dips toward the horizon, shadows stretch quickly across the bowl, leaving much of the first-base side, behind home plate, and even some outfield seating shaded by mid-to-late innings.
Higher levels (300s and 400s) often shade by first pitch for evening games, making them great options for comfort without sacrificing view.
