What You Need to Know About Shade at Chase Field

Welcome to the desert! Chase Field is built for extreme heat, and that reality shapes everything about the fan experience. With a retractable roof, powerful air conditioning, and deep upper decks, the stadium is far more forgiving than older outdoor parks for shade.

However, shade still matters, particularly during early-season games when the roof is open. When sunlight is allowed in, it doesn’t hit the seating bowl evenly, and some sections heat up far more than others.

How Shade Actually Works at Chase Field

Because of the heat, the roof typically doesn’t open during the summer months. When the roof is open, sunlight enters primarily from the first-base side and tracks across the field as the day goes on.

This leaves the third-base side in shade earlier and for longer stretches, especially once shadows begin forming from the upper decks and roof structure. Even when the roof is closed, seats tucked under overhangs feel cooler and darker than exposed lower-bowl areas closer to the field.

The Best Shaded Sections

  • Baseline Sections 118 – 135: These third-base side field-level sections are some of the best lower-bowl options for shade. Sitting higher in the section places you under structural cover that blocks sunlight earlier than most areas near the field.
  • Club Sections 211 – 223: The club level offers some of the most reliable shade in the park. Overhead coverage, elevation, and airflow combine to keep these seats comfortable whether the roof is open or closed.
  • Infield/Outfield Reserve Sections 314 – 332: These seats benefit from both height and roof angles, making them among the most consistently shaded options during day games. They’re especially effective during afternoon starts when lower levels remain bright.

Evening Games and Shade

Fortunately, evening games are noticeably more comfortable across the stadium.

As the sun lowers, shade spreads quickly from the third-base side toward home plate, and most upper-level and club seats are shaded by or shortly after first pitch. With the roof closed, shade becomes nearly uniform, but covered and elevated seating still feels cooler and darker sooner than field-level sections.
