What You Need to Know About Shade at Petco Park

Petco Park is one of baseball’s favorite ballparks thanks to its open-air feel, downtown skyline views, and relaxed San Diego vibe. But sunshine is also a defining feature of Padres day games.

The stadium sits in a city known for its bright sun, and the seating bowl doesn’t have deep roof canopies across much of the lower level.

How Shade Moves During a Day Game

Because the batter faces North at Petco Park, the sun’s path takes it across the first-base side early in day games and then toward the third-base side later. That means many seats down the first-base line and in right/center are in direct sun for much of the game, while shadows will begin covering the third-base side and higher seating earlier.

As the day wears on, shadows from the upper decks and overhangs extend deeper across the bowl, first covering the Terrace / 200 Level behind home plate and then the upper deck back rows. The back rows of almost every section are generally more shaded than front rows because they sit closer to structural coverage.

Stick to 3rd Base, But There Are Options Elsewhere

To make it super easy, Petco Park Insider created a color-coded shade map for seats.

Keep this in mind: third base is even-numbered sections, and first base is odd-numbered

  • Even-Numbered Sections 110 – 134: On the lower level third-base side, these back rows under structural overhangs see meaningful shade earlier than front rows, making them a very shade choice that’s close to the field. Sections 126 – 134 are on left field under the scoreboard
  • Odd-Numbered Sections 107 – 123: You can seat on the first-base side, but you need to be in the upper rows in order to take advantage of the overhang from the 200-level.
  • Odd- Numbered Sections 129 – 137:  Seats in right field can also get shade on the upper rows.
  • Even-Numbered Sections 204 – 222: Higher rows under the upper level overhang provide some of the best early shade in day games and are cited by fans as go-to spots for sunlight relief.
  • Even-Numbered Sections 316 – 328: The upper deck is sheltered by more structural coverage, and the back rows here tend to shade long before many lower bowl seats, making them one of the most consistently shaded options.

Evening Games and Shade

Evening starts are usually far more comfortable shade-wise at Petco Park. As the sun lowers toward the horizon, shadows extend rapidly across the seating bowl, leaving most of the third-base side, Terrace/200 Level, and upper deck shaded by mid-game.

Lower first-base and right/center field seats still might get lingering light early, but conditions improve much faster than during midday starts.
