What You Need to Know About Shade at BayCare Ballpark
BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater delivers one of the best Spring Training and Minor League Baseball experiences in Florida, with an intimate layout that keeps fans close to the field and creates a relaxed, up-close baseball atmosphere.
But that same openness means there is far less built-in shade than at most Major League parks, and the Florida sun can be relentless even in March. Because the stadium is compact, the difference between a shaded seat and a sun-soaked one can be just a few rows.
How Shade Works at BayCare Ballpark
For most post–Daylight Saving Time afternoon games, the sun begins above the first-base side of the grandstand. That positioning allows the second deck to cast shade downward into the lower bowl earlier than many fans expect. As a result, higher rows in first-base side sections begin shaded at first pitch and stay shaded as the sun moves.

This typically would mean the third-base side will start to get relief in the later afternoon. However, since there is very little protective covering on that side, first base is the best place to be.
By mid-game, shade expands deeper into the seating bowl, especially across sections closer to home plate and toward left-center.
The Best Sections
-
Sections 104 – 114 Upper Rows: These sit directly under the second deck and provide some of the most consistent overhang shade in the stadium. Once you reach roughly Row 15 and higher, you’re typically protected for most of the game. Sections 111 – 114 tend to get shaded later in the afternoon around 3:00, but there should still be some early cover in the top rows.
-
200-Level Club Seating: Every seat in this level is roofed, making it the safest and most comfortable option on hot, bright days.
Afternoon vs Evening Games
Evening spring training games are much more forgiving, with shadows stretching quickly across the grandstand. For afternoon starts, however, planning around the first-base side and overhang coverage makes a dramatic difference in comfort.
