What You Need to Know About Shade at American Family Fields of Phoenix
American Family Fields of Phoenix is home to the Milwaukee Brewers for Spring Training and the ACL Brewers of the Rookie League. It is a classic open-air complex, designed more for sightlines and proximity to the field than for protection from the elements. That makes it a fantastic place to watch players up close, but it’s also one of the most brutal for protection .
Arizona sunshine is intense, and there is very little roof structure compared to Major League stadiums. As a result, shade here is not evenly distributed — it is directional and structural.
The Best Sections for Shade of Near 1st Base

Simply put, the best place to find shade is where the coverings and structures are. While there isn’t a lot, covering is primarily on the first-base side and behind home plate with the press box.
- Sections 100 – 102, under the press box: These are the best shade seats in the park. Directly under the press box, they remain shaded for most of the game.
- Odd-Numbered Sections 103 – 117: These sections benefit from both elevation and the pergola structure above the concourse, giving them early and lasting shade. You’ll still want to look for seats in the upper rows to get under the structure. You may find some relief along the first-base sections, but only if you site in the top 5 rows.
- Berm above Brewers Bullpen: This lawn area becomes fully shaded relatively early and is a popular choice for those wanting both shade and a bullpen view. Keep in mind this is open seating so you’ll want to get there early!
Evening Games at the Park
Evening games are more forgiving as shadows stretch across the bowl and provide more shade to seats.
However, the first-base side and press box overhangs remain the safest choices throughout the day.
