Lincoln Financial Field will host six matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Because many games are scheduled during daytime and early evening hours, sun exposure can be a factor for fans seated in open sections.

While FIFA may implement cooling breaks during hotter matches, shaded and covered seating can still make a noticeable difference in comfort throughout the game.

 

Lincoln Financial Field, affectionately known as The Linc, is the home of the Philadelphia Eagles and the Temple Owls. Located in South Philadelphia as part of the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, this open-air stadium replaced the legendary Veterans Stadium in 2003.

While the stadium is modern and eco-friendly, it remains a traditional outdoor venue. This means fans are fully exposed to the elements, from the humid heat of a September home opener to the biting winds of a January playoff run. Finding the right section is essential for staying comfortable throughout four quarters of football.

How Shade Moves During the Day

The sun moves across the Philly sky in a way that creates a stark difference between the two sidelines. During a 1:00 PM kickoff, the sun is high and slightly toward the southeast. As the afternoon progresses, it moves toward the west, behind the Eagles’ sideline. This means the west sideline starts getting shade in the highest rows first, and that shadow gradually creeps down toward the field.

Fans on the east sideline (visitor side) have the sun directly in their faces for nearly the entire first half and most of the second, often dealing with significant glare and heat.

Top Picks: The Best Sections for Shade

If your goal is to stay out of the sun and avoid the glare, look for these specific “safe zones” within the stadium:

  • Field Level Sections 106-134: This is the ultimate shade destination. On the lower level, you want to be in the back rows to utilize the overhang.

  • Sections 207 – 239: Even though they are high up, the sections directly under the “wings” of the stadium are excellent. These structures were specifically designed to provide relief for fans in the upper tiers, making them much cooler than the open corners.

  • The West Side Club Level C1-C6 and C35 – C40: These seats are perfectly positioned on the home sideline. They stay in the shade longer than almost any other section and offer the added benefit of indoor relief if the outdoor temperature becomes too much.

  • The South End Zone 109-112: If you want to sit on the end zone, staying in the lower section is better for the shade.

Late Afternoon and Evening Games: Tracking the Sunset

For 4:05 PM or 4:25 PM starts, the sun moves much lower in the sky toward the west-northwest. This is when the east sideline (visitor side) becomes particularly difficult. The sun will shine directly underneath the east canopy, hitting fans in the face and creating a harsh glare across the turf.

If you are attending a late-afternoon game, the west sideline remains your best bet, as the sun will be directly behind the stadium structure. For the most comfortable experience during these games, avoid the north end zone, as it will be the last areas to see the sun go down. By staying on the south side of the stadium, you’ll enjoy a cool, consistent shadow throughout the most game.
