What You Need to Know About Shade at SoFi Stadium
World Cup 2026
SoFi Stadium will host eight matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Because many games are scheduled during daytime and early evening hours, sun exposure can be a factor for fans seated in open sections.
While FIFA may implement cooling breaks during hotter matches, shaded and covered seating can still make a noticeable difference in comfort throughout the game.
SoFi Stadium is an architectural masterpiece located in Inglewood, California, serving as the home for both the Los Angeles Chargers and the Los Angeles Rams. It is the center of the Hollywood Park development and stands as one of the most expensive and advanced sporting venues ever built.
The stadium has a translucent roof canopy and is technically open on the sides to allow the Pacific breeze to flow through. The roof is designed to protect fans from the rain and direct vertical rays, but it allows a significant amount of natural light to filter through.
This creates a bright, airy atmosphere that feels like an outdoor park, but it also means that “shade” is a relative term depending on where you sit.
How Shade Moves During the Day
The stadium is oriented in a northwest-southeast direction, and the sun’s path is the most critical factor for game-day comfort. For a typical 1:05 PM kickoff, the sun is high and shines directly through the translucent roof, creating a “soft light” effect across the entire field.
As the game moves into the afternoon, the sun tracks toward the west. Because the west side of the stadium has a high structural wall and more opaque canopy edges, the west sideline begins to fall into a deep, solid shadow. Meanwhile, the east sideline remains illuminated, and the diffused light coming through the roof can still cause a significant rise in temperature for fans in those sections.
The Best Sections for Shade
Since the roof acts more like a parasol than a blackout curtain, your best strategy is to put the stadium’s solid structural elements between you and the sun:
-
The West Sideline (Sections C106 – C118 and 314-331): This is the gold standard for shade at SoFi. As the sun moves behind the stadium’s western rim, these sections move from diffused light into true, cool shade. For 1:00 PM games, the back rows get dark first, followed by the lower rows by mid-game.
-
The Club Levels 212 – 227: These sections are deep enough within the stadium’s bowl that they are shielded from the “greenhouse effect” much earlier than the upper decks.
-
Upper Deck Sections 405 – 425 and 504 – 525: While you are high up, the very back rows of the west side are tucked under the most opaque parts of the roof structure, offering some of the most consistent shade in the building.
-
South End Zone: Sections like 230-234 are excellent secondary options. They benefit from the western shadows while avoiding the direct glare that often hits the north end zone.
Late Afternoon and Evening Games: Tracking the Sunset
For 5:15 PM local kickoffs or late-season afternoon games, the sun becomes less about heat and more about the “California Glow.” As the sun sets toward the west-northwest, it can shine through the open ends of the stadium. If you are sitting on the east sideline during this time, you may experience a golden-hour glare that reflects off the Infinity Screen and the glass surfaces of the stadium.
For the most comfortable viewing experience during these times, stay on the west sideline. By the second quarter of a late game, the west side is in a cool, consistent shadow, while the east side may still be dealing with the setting sun’s rays peeking through the canopy’s edge.
If you are sensitive to heat or light, avoid the north end zone and the east sideline, as they remain the brightest spots in the house until the sun fully disappears behind the Inglewood horizon.
