What You Need to Know About Shade at Estadio Akron

World Cup 2026

Estadio Akron will host four matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Because many games are scheduled during daytime and early evening hours, sun exposure can be a factor for fans seated in open sections.

While FIFA may implement cooling breaks during hotter matches, shaded and covered seating can still make a noticeable difference in comfort throughout the game.

Estadio Akron is one of the most architecturally unique stadiums in the world, serving as the home for C.D. Guadalajara (Chivas). The stadium is designed to resemble a rising volcano, with its grass-covered exterior slopes leading up to a massive white ring roof that mimics a cloud of smoke. Since its opening in 2010, it has become a centerpiece of Mexican soccer and is set to be a key venue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The stadium’s striking roof is designed to protect fans while leaving a large “ocular” opening over the field. While this ensures the grass gets plenty of natural light, it also means that sunlight pours into specific parts of the seating bowl during the day. Given Zapopan’s high-altitude sun, choosing a seat in the shadow of the canopy is essential for a comfortable afternoon at the “crater.”

How Shade Moves During the Day

As the sun moves across the sky during a typical afternoon match, the shadow from the western roof follows a predictable path. Because the stadium is oriented roughly north-south, the sun begins the afternoon high to the south and west.

This means the west side of the stadium, which houses the home team benches and primary suites, is the first to receive significant shade. As the afternoon progresses toward a typical kickoff, the shadow from the western roof structure extends across the pitch, eventually covering the lower and middle tiers of the west sideline completely.

Conversely, the east sideline remains exposed to the direct afternoon sun for the longest duration, with the upper sections there often remaining in the sun until the sun dips low enough behind the western canopy. The douth end zone also tends to see shade earlier than the north end zone due to the sun’s southern arc.

Stick to the West Side of the Pitch

To maximize your comfort and stay out of the direct glare, focus on the western side:

  • Sections T1 01 – 06 and T1 34 – 38: These are the lower bowl sections on the west side.

  • Sections T2 01 – 10 and T2 41 – 48: The upper level of the stadium should have more relief over the duration of the day.

Late Afternoon and Evening Games: Tracking the Sunset

For 5:00 PM or 7:00 PM kickoffs, the sun sits low in the west-northwest sky, directly behind the west stand. This is the ideal scenario for fans on the west side, as they are tucked into a deep, cool shadow. However, for those on the east sidelines is “peak glare” time. The sun shines directly through the roof opening, making it difficult to follow a cross or see the video boards clearly.
