What You Need to Know About Shade at Goodyear Ballpark

Goodyear Ballpark is a modern facility located in Goodyear, Arizona. Since opening in 2009, it has provided a home for both the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Guardians. The stadium is famous for the The Ziz, a massive 60-foot tall metallic sculpture located in front of the home plate entrance, which has become an iconic meet-up spot for fans.

While the aesthetic is rugged, the fan experience is quite comfortable, provided you know where to sit. Goodyear’s orientation is fan-friendly, allowing the grandstand to act as a natural sunblock as the afternoon wears on.

How Shade Moves During the Day

Because the stadium faces northeast, the sun moves behind the grandstand during a typical 1:05 PM game. The sun is high and slightly to the south, leaving most of the field and the lower rows in direct light.

However, the press box is specifically positioned to cast a long shadow early on. By 2:30 PM, this shadow expands to cover the majority of the sections behind home plate. By the end of the game, most seats in sections behind the press box are fully covered. The first-base line remains in the sun the longest, as the angle of the sun shines across the field until late in the afternoon.

Find The Shade Covers Behind Home & Club Seating

If you want to ensure a cool experience during the peak of the day, these are the top areas to book:

  • Club Seating Sections 106A, 106B, and 107A: This is the gold standard for Goodyear. Not only do you get the best shade under the canopy, but you also access to more comfortable, padded seating.

  • Under The Press Box Sections 111 – 114: These are the most popular non-premium seats for shade-seekers. The higher your row number, the earlier you will be protected from the sun. By the 5th inning, these rows are often the coolest spots in the lower bowl.

  • Right Field Pavilion: If you prefer a social atmosphere, the pavilion in right field is a great place to “park” yourself. It offers a consistent roof and a breeze, though seating is limited and works on a first-come, first-served basis.

Evening Shade at the Park

For a 6:05 PM or 7:05 PM start, while rare, the sun is no longer “beating down.” However, its low angle in the west-northwest can create a blinding glare for the first few innings. Stick along the first-base line and you should get some shade relief.

The evening is actually the best time to sit in the outfield berm. You get a spectacular view of the Arizona sunset without the midday heat, and the “throng” on the concourse usually thins out, giving you more room to spread out a blanket.
