What You Need to Know About Shade at Peoria Sports Complex
Peoria Sports Complex was the first facility in the country built specifically to host two MLB teams for Spring Training, the Padres and the Mariners.
Located in the heart of the Peoria Entertainment District, it is surrounded by restaurants and shops, making it one of the most convenient “park and stay” destinations in the Cactus League.
The ballpark’s design incorporates a distinctive trellised roof. While it doesn’t provide the total canopy coverage, its slats are angled to maximize shade during the peak hours of a standard 1:05 PM spring game.
For fans coming from cooler climates, these shaded pockets are essential for enjoying the game without the fatigue of the Arizona heat.

How Shade Moves During the Day
Because the stadium faces northeast, the sun begins the afternoon high above the third-base grandstand. Shade is mostly confined to the Club Level and the very top rows of the Upper Box.
By the 3rd or 4th inning, the press box shadow stretches down toward the cross-aisle. By the late innings, the majority of the grandstand behind home plate and along the third-base line is comfortably in the shade. The first-base line (Padres side) and the sprawling right-field berm are the sunny sections, staying bright and hot until the sun finally sets behind the stadium structure.
3rd Base is the Best Shaded Side
To maximize your comfort and stay out of the direct rays, prioritize these areas on the seating map:
-
The Club Seats Sections 305 – 308: These are the premier seats for shade. In addition to being covered, they feature oversized, padded chairs, making them the most comfortable way to watch a game in Peoria.
- Sections 201 – 219 Odd Numbers: Stick to higher rows to get the most shaded throughout the day. Specifically, row HH+.
- Upper Box Sections 309 – 319 Odd Numbers: The trellised roof does most of the heavy lifting in this section. Stick to higher rows to shade throughout the game.
Evening and Night Games
While evening games are rare at the Peoria Sports Complex, they offer relief from the heat. It’s still recommended to stick to third as the sun starts to set. But you do have more options.
The outfield berm is a great spot for evening games, providing a cool and relaxed atmosphere under the stadium lights without the intensity of the daytime sun.
