What You Need to Know About Shade at Surprise Stadium
Surprise Stadium features a distinctive two-tier seating bowl that holds about 10,500 fans. The park feels like a miniature MLB stadium. It is home to the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers.
The stadium’s design is a major win for shade seekers. Architects intentionally designed the upper level to overhang the lower seating, effectively turning the top deck into a giant sunshield for the fans below. This makes Surprise one of the few stadiums where you don’t necessarily have to pay for premium “Club” seats just to stay out of the Arizona heat.
How Shade Moves During the Day
The stadium faces northeast, placing the sun behind the grandstand. At a typical 1:05 PM start, the sun is positioned in a way that the first-base side (Rangers) is already shielded by the upper deck’s shadow.
As the afternoon goes on, the shadow moves toward the left-field corner. This means the Royals’ side (third base) starts out hot but eventually cools down as the shade line “creeps” across the infield. By the 6th or 7th inning, nearly the entire grandstand is comfortably in the shade, with only the outfield berm and the far corners of the stadium still catching the late-afternoon rays.
Top Picks: The Best Sections for Shade
-
Upper Dugout Sections 201–206
- Legends Deck
- Sections 100 – 112 Even Numbers
-
Upper Dugout Sections 201-206): If you want a 100% guarantee of no sun, the Upper Dugout seats are your best bet. They are the highest seats in the park and sit directly under the roof.
-
Lower Level Sections 102 – 112 Even (First-Base Side): If you prefer to be in the lower bowl but don’t want to bake, target Row M or higher. These rows are tucked under the second-story overhang.
- Lower Level 101 – 111 Odd (Third-Base Side): In the late afternoon, by 2:30 – 3:00 pm, these sections should be in full shade.
-
Budweiser Legends Deck: For a premium experience, this deck on the first-base side offers upscale catering and a fully shaded, elevated view of the field.
Evening and Night Games
Evening games are a highlight of the Surprise schedule, especially for local fans looking to escape the daytime heat.
For a 6:00 PM or 7:00 PM start, the sun is no longer a factor for heat, but the setting sun can create a significant glare for fans on the first-base side as it dips behind the third-base grandstand.
The temperature in the West Valley can drop rapidly after dark, often falling 20 degrees by the end of the game. Once the sun is gone, the stadium can feel quite chilly, especially in the higher 200-level seats where the wind picks up.
