What You Need to Know About Shade at Tempe Diablo Stadium

Tempe Diablo Stadium, home to the Angels in Spring Training, is one of the most scenic parks in Arizona.

While it offers postcard views, its classic design lacks the massive modern canopies found at newer facilities, making shade a rare commodity. It is one of the least-shaded stadiums in the Cactus League.

How Shade Moves During the Day

With its northeast orientation, the sun starts the game positioned high over the stadium. Early on, the grandstand is mostly sun-drenched except for the very back rows.

As the afternoon progresses, the sun slowly sets over the third-base set, which is when you start to see some shade creep into the stadium.

Stick to the Higher Rows Behind Home Plate

Since there isn’t much protection from a roof or canopy, there is very little protection from the sun’s rays.

  • Field MVP Sections 10 – 12: These seats sit directly behind home plate and are the best spots to find shade throughout the afternoon. Aim for the higher rows to get some relief from the canopy above.
  • Sections 13 – 22: As the afternoon progresses, the upper rows in these sections on the first-base get some shade from the pavilion above.
  • Bud Patio Upper Pavilion: The pavilion provides great views of the field and includes a free buffet when sitting in this section

Evening and Night Games

For rare evening games starting at 6:00 PM or 7:00 PM, the sun is no longer a heat factor, but its low angle in the west creates a massive glare for fans in the lower rows.

Stick to the higher rows and you should be able to have a great vantage point all night.
