What You Need to Know About Shade at Charlotte Sports Park

Charlotte Sports Park is an 82-acre complex in Port Charlotte, Florida, that serves as the Spring Training home of the Tampa Bay Rays.

With a capacity of approximately 7,500, the stadium provides a great atmosphere where fans can enjoy coastal breezes, a tiki bar in left-center field, and a 360-degree concourse that ensures you never miss a pitch while exploring the grounds.

Because the stadium features large cantilevered roofs over the primary grandstands, it offers some of the best shade opportunities in the Grapefruit League.

How Shade Actually Works Here

The stadium is oriented with the batter facing northeast, so the sun tracks from behind the first-base grandstand toward the third-base side during a standard 1:05 PM game. This positioning creates an immediate “shade advantage” for fans sitting along the first base line because the stadium’s roof structure blocks the sun almost immediately.

On the third base side, the sun is positioned directly in front of the fans for the first half of the game. It isn’t until the sun begins to descend behind the third base roof, typically by mid-game, that the shadows finally reach the lower rows of those sections.

1st Base is the Best for Shade

Securing a seat on the first-base side in the upper level is the most effective way to guarantee a comfortable, sun-free experience.

  • First Base Sections 201 – 206: These are the premier shade seats in the ballpark. Because the sun is behind this grandstand, the roof covers nearly every row except the very first one. The first few rows might get hit with the sun early, so stick to the upper rows.

  • Home Plate Sections 207 – 212: Behind home plate are typically safe zones from the sun as the roof and press box hangs over.

  • Sections 213 – 218: In the 200-level on the third-base side, the very last rows are the most likely to be shaded for the entire afternoon.

Afternoon vs. Evening Games

For evening games, the entire stadium becomes much more comfortable as the sun sets, though the third base side may actually deal with some direct glare in the very early innings before the sun dips below the horizon.

Your best bet is to stick to first base.
