What You Need to Know About Shade at CoolToday Park
CoolToday Park is the modern Spring Training home of the Atlanta Braves, located in North Port, Florida. Opened in 2019, the facility is a centerpiece of the Grapefruit League, featuring a 360-degree concourse and a capacity of roughly 8,000 fans.
Because the stadium features a large cantilevered roof and a specifically positioned upper terrace, it provides excellent shade for those sitting behind home plate and along the first base line, while fans on the third base side are largely left exposed to the elements.

How Shade Actually Works Here
The stadium is oriented northeast, so the sun typically tracks behind the first-base grandstand, casting a shadow that expands toward the field as a game progresses.
Early in the afternoon, the sun is high and primarily impacts the third-base line and the outfield berms.
As mid-afternoon approaches, the roof over the Terrace Level and the press box structure cast a deep shadow over the first-base dugout area. By the later innings, this shadow stretches across the infield, though the third-base sections often remain in direct sunlight until very late in the day.
The First-Base Side is Best for Shade
Securing a seat on the first-base side, especially behind the dugout, is a good way to guarantee a cool experience while staying close to the Braves’ bench.
-
Sections 107 – 114: These sections are the go-to spots for shade and views, offering protection from the sun for the entire duration of a day game. Sections 110 – 114 are behind home plate.
-
Terrace Level 201 – 207: These are the most consistently shaded seats in the park. If you want shade regardless of the time of day, these sections are your best bet.
- Truist Pavilion: This pavilion is an elevated bleacher section that sits high above the right centerfield wall and offers a great outfield view. Only the top few rows of this pavilion are consistently shaded by the cantilevered roof.
Afternoon vs. Evening Games
For a 1:05 PM afternoon start, the third base line “bakes” in the Florida heat, making it essential to prioritize the first base side or the upper terrace for comfort.
In contrast, evening games are much more forgiving as the sun sets behind the third base side grandstand. While the low angle of the sunset can occasionally cause a brief glare for those on the first base side in the first inning or two, the entire park quickly shades as the sun sets, significantly dropping the temperature for the remainder of the game.
