What You Need to Know About Shade at Ed Smith Stadium
Known as “Birdland South,” Ed Smith Stadium is the Spring Training home of the Baltimore Orioles. Originally opened in 1989, the park features a Spanish Mediterranean exterior and seats from Camden Yards, creating a familiar atmosphere for Baltimore fans.
Because the stadium was designed with a focus on fan comfort, including a fabric sunshade that keeps the top ten rows out of the sun, it provides a mix of classic sightlines and structural protection from the elements.
How Shade Actually Works at the Ballpark
Ed Smith Stadium features a rare southeast orientation. This unique alignment flips the typical sun patterns, so instead of the sun setting behind the third base line, it tracks more directly behind the home plate and first-base side during a 1:05 PM game.
Because the sun is positioned south-southwest during peak play hours, the first-base grandstand acts as a massive sunshield for itself. This leaves the first-base line is actually the shade side, with shadows moving from the back of the grandstand toward the field as the game progresses.

The First Base Side is Best for Shade
Focusing on the first base line is the most effective strategy for staying cool while enjoying the game.
-
Sections 203 – 223: Pretty much the entire 200-level will get shade throughout the game. On first base and behind home, sections 203 – 214 (rows 5+) have more rows out of the sun. For third-base sections 215 – 223 (rows 10+), stick to the upper rows
-
Third Base Lounge For those who prefer to escape the heat entirely, this second-level area offers indoor gathering space and a climate-controlled bar.
Afternoon vs. Evening Games
During 1:05 PM afternoon games, the Florida sun is intense, making the shaded back rows of the 200-level highly sought after.
For evening games, usually starting at 6:05 PM, the entire stadium becomes much cooler as the sun dips below the grandstand. While the setting sun might cause a brief glare in the outfield, the seating bowl quickly settles into comfortable shadows, allowing fans to enjoy the Birdland South atmosphere without the heat.
