What You Need to Know About Shade at George M. Steinbrenner Field

George M. Steinbrenner Field is the premier Spring Training home of the New York Yankees and the summer home of the Tampa Tarpons.

Opened in 1996, the park was designed as a “Yankee Stadium South,” featuring the exact dimensions of the Bronx original and its signature white scalloped frieze.

Because the stadium features a massive roof structure designed to protect fans from Tampa’s heat and frequent rain showers, it offers more structural shade than almost any other park in the Grapefruit League, provided you choose your section wisely.

How Shade Actually Works Here

George M. Steinbrenner Field is oriented with the batter facing northeast, but its massive cantilevered roof creates a unique environment. For a standard 1:05 PM start, the sun is positioned behind the first-base grandstand. This means the stadium’s own roof casts a large shadow that immediately covers the third-base side and the area directly behind home plate.

As the afternoon progresses, the sun moves across the sky towards third base. While the shadow eventually expands to cover more of the lower level sections, those fans in the front rows start the game in the sun zone.

Behind Home Plate is the Most Ideal Shaded Spot

For the most reliable protection and the coolest experience, you should prioritize seats under the roof and behind home plate.

  • Sections 208 – 214: These are the best shade seats in the house. Because the sun is behind home plate for the majority of afternoon games, the roof provides nearly total coverage for these sections from the first pitch.

  • Sections 203 – 207 & 215 – 219: If you must sit on the baselines, you need to be at the top rows to find shade early.

  • Loge Boxes: If you want to spend a little extra, the Loge Boxes provide a private/semi-private, all-inclusive experience. These box above the 200-level provide shade throughout the day.

Late Afternoon and Evening Games

Late afternoon and evening games offer significant relief as the temperature drops, though the first- base side may deal with a brief, intense glare as the sun sets in the West before the entire stadium settles into the evening shadows.

You’ll still want to stick behind home plate, but as the evening winds down, the 200-level should be plenty shaded on both sides.
