What You Need to Know About Shade at Lee Health Sports Complex
Lee Health Sports Complex is the Spring Training home of the Minnesota Twins and the regular-season home of the Single-A Fort Myers Mighty Mussels.
While the park is celebrated for its intimacy and expanded boardwalk that allows fans to circle the entire outfield, its open-air design means structural shade is a premium commodity that must be planned for in advance.
How Shade Actually Works Here
The stadium is oriented with the batter facing northeast, which heavily influences how the sun moves across the seating bowl. At the start of a standard 1:05 PM game, the sun is positioned behind the first-base grandstand, providing immediate relief to fans on that side.
As the game progresses, the sun’s path moves across the sky until it is behind the third-base grandstand near the final innings. This shift means that while the first base side starts shadier, the third base side eventually becomes the cooler option as the sun begins to set.
Due to the upward angle of the roof, rows 1 through 10 in the 200-level and nearly all 100-level sections will be in direct sunlight for the vast majority of an afternoon game.

The Last Rows of the 200-Level is Best for Shade
To guarantee a shaded experience throughout the game, you should focus almost exclusively on the highest rows of the upper level. The make it very easy, you can request shaded seats if you order tickets in person or over the phone.
- Top 3 Rows of Home Plate View Level: Every section from 201 – 217 should have guaranteed shade in the top three rows. This is your best bet for early afternoon games.
-
Sections 207 – 212: Sticking on the 200-level, behind home plate gets protected from the press box. Target the upper half of the section.
-
Shaded Standing Room: If you prefer to move around, sections 301 and 302 on the Terrace Level offer shaded standing room areas with clear views of the field.
Late Afternoon and Evening Games
For a game that starts or continues into the late afternoon, the shade advantage shifts decidedly to the third base side as the sun moves behind that part of the stadium. By 4:00 PM, the shadows stretch much further across the infield, providing relief to seats that were previously exposed.
For evening games (typically 6:05 PM or 7:05 PM), the stadium is much more forgiving. While the first few innings might feature a lingering glare on the first-base side, the sun quickly dips below the grandstand, cooling the entire seating bowl and making the outfield boardwalk a much more comfortable place to watch the game.
