What You Need to Know About Shade at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium

Located in Jupiter, Florida, Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium is the Spring Training home of both the St. Louis Cardinals and the Miami Marlins. It is one of only two stadiums in Florida to host two MLB teams, meaning there is a game nearly every day during the spring.

Because the park was designed with a simple, open-air aesthetic, it offers a classic “old-school” feel, though the lack of a traditional roof makes it one of the most sun-exposed parks in the Grapefruit League.

How Shade Actually Works Here

The stadium is oriented with the batter facing northeast. Because there is no roof, shade does not work in the traditional way of sitting under a structure. Instead, the press box and two adjacent canopies acts as the only sun-blocker for the entire stadium.

At the start of a typical 1:05 PM game, the sun is high and begins to move behind the home plate grandstand. This creates a small but effective shadow that moves down from the top of the 200-level.

Fans in the lower 100-level will remain in direct sun for a large majority of the afternoon.

The 200-Level is Best for Shade

You should exclusively target the 200-level, as the lower 100-level is almost entirely unshaded.

  • Sections 201 – 213: The upper rows of the 200-level should provide ample shade throughout the afternoon
  • Sections 206 – 208: These are the only sections in the park with a true structure over them. If you want protection from the press box, look for the upper rows in these sections.

Late Afternoon and Evening Games

In the late afternoon, the shadow from the press box and the stadium’s main structure finally begins to stretch toward the field, but it rarely covers the lower bowl or the field itself until very late in the day.

For evening games, usually starting at 6:05 PM, the stadium is much more comfortable. Since the sun sets behind the stadium grandstand, the heat dissipates quickly, and the lack of a roof allows for a great breeze to blow through the park, making these the most pleasant games to attend in Jupiter.
