What You Need to Know About Shade at TD Ballpark
TD Ballpark is the Spring Training home of the Toronto Blue Jays and the summer home of the Dunedin Blue Jays. Originally built in 1930 and most recently renovated in 2019, the 8,500-seat stadium is located in a residential area of Dunedin, offering a classic neighborhood feel.
The recent renovations added a 360-degree boardwalk concourse, maintaining its status as one of the most intimate venues in the Grapefruit League.
How Shade Actually Works Here
TD Ballpark features a rare southeast orientation, which significantly alters traditional Florida sun patterns. In a typical early afternoon game, the sun is positioned behind the first base grandstand. This means the stadium’s own roof casts a shadow that immediately covers the upper rows of the first-base side.
As the afternoon progresses, the sun tracks over the stadium. Unlike most parks where the shade moves from third to first, at TD Ballpark, the first-base side is the shade side early on.
Shadows from the roof creep down the upper first base grandstand during the game, but the third base side remains largely sunny until the sun is low enough for the roof to cast a long enough shadow.

1st Base is Best for Shade
For the most consistent shade experience, prioritize the first-base side.
-
Sections 200 – 208: The upper rows of these sections are the most reliable shaded seats in the ballpark.
-
Sections 209 – 212: If you are on the third-base side, stick to these sections. However, only the top 3 rows will provide reliable shade in the early part of the afternoon.
Late Afternoon and Evening Games
In the late afternoon, the unique Southeast orientation allows the shadows to finally stretch toward the third-base side and the lower 100-level sections.
By 4:00 PM, the relief expands to the higher rows of sections 208 – 212. For evening games, the stadium becomes a coastal paradise. As the sun sets, the heat of the day dissipates quickly, and the entire seating bowl falls into shadow, allowing fans to enjoy the sea breezes from nearby St. Joseph Sound without the intense Florida glare.
