What You Need to Know About Shade at Bank of America Stadium

Located in Charlotte, Bank of America Stadium is the home of the Carolina Panthers (NFL) and Charlotte FC (MLS). Opened in 1996, it is a classic “bowl” style stadium known for its three massive main entrances flanked by bronze panther statues.

While it lacks the modern retractable roofs found in newer stadiums, its central location offers fans a spectacular view of the Charlotte skyline, especially from the upper decks on the north and east sides.

How Shade Actually Works Here

The stadium is oriented Northwest-to-Southeast, which means the sun rises over the east sideline (visitor side) and sets behind the west stand (home side).

For a 1:00 PM game, the sun is nearly overhead, and almost the entire stadium is sun-drenched. However, as the sun moves toward the west, the height of the western grandstand begins to cast a shadow onto the pitch and the lower western seats. By late afternoon, the west side is a sanctuary of shade, while fans on the east side are forced to look directly into the setting sun.

The West Side is Best for Shade

If you want to avoid the “miserable” heat of a clear Carolina day, staying on the west side is your only reliable tactic.

  • Sections 126 – 136: Focus on the upper rows to get the shade faster.
  • Sections 336 – 351: These sections generally offer a more comfortable environment and better protection than the lower and upper levels.
  • Sections 537 – 549: In the early afternoon, the sun is directly behind you. Sitting in the upper rows will give you some protection from the stadium structure.

Late Afternoon and Evening Games

During late afternoon (4:00 PM – 6:00 PM), the shade advantage on the west side becomes total. The shadow stretches across the entire pitch, eventually reaching the east side seats just as the sun begins to set.

For evening games (7:30 PM starts), the stadium is much more temperate. The west side is shaded from the first whistle, though fans in the upper east deck (500-level) may still experience a final 20-30 minutes of direct sunlight before the sun dips below the Uptown skyline.
