What You Need to Know About Shade at CHS Field
Located in the Lowertown neighborhood of St. Paul, CHS Field is the home of the St. Paul Saints (Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins). Opened in 2015, the stadium is celebrated for its sleek, modern design and its integration into the surrounding urban landscape.
Its wide-open concourse that allows fans to see the field from almost any vantage point in the park.
How Shade Actually Works Here
The stadium is oriented with the batter facing East. This means that during a 1:00 PM game, the sun begins nearly overhead but quickly moves behind the grandstand on first base and home plate.

The stadium’s roof and upper-tier structures do a lot of the heavy lifting for finding shade. It is largely present in the back rows of the infield from the start of the game and expands toward the field as the afternoon goes on.
First Base and Behind Home Are Your Best Shaded Spots
For an afternoon game, your best bet is to secure a seat behind home plate, as it enters the shade earliest and stays cool the longest.
-
Sections 101 – 111: These are the best sections for shade seekers which are behind home plate. Aim for rows closest to the concourse (typically row 12 and up) to be under the structural overhang.
-
First Base Sections 104 – 106: These sections on first base are underneath the roof and the sun will be behind you most of the game.
-
First Base Sections 112 & 113: These sections on the first base side are also under the stadium structure. While you might get some sun in the early afternoon, the upper rows can still get shade for the day.
Late Afternoon and Evening Games
In the late afternoon, the shade completely engulfs the infield and begins to stretch across the pitcher’s mound toward the left-field wall.
For evening games (typically 7:00 PM), the stadium is one of the most comfortable in Triple-A baseball. The sun sets behind the main grandstand, meaning the entire seating bowl is shaded well before the first pitch, leaving only the “Treasure Island Terrace” in right field to catch the final rays of the day.
