What You Need to Know About Shade at Coca-Cola Park

Located in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Coca-Cola Park is the home of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies).

Since opening in 2008, it has been consistently ranked as one of the best ballparks in Minor League Baseball, featuring unique viewing areas like the Bacon Strip in right field and the “Tiki Terrace” in left field. The stadium’s design utilizes its main grandstand to provide a large “shadow anchor” for fans sitting along the third base line.

The Northeast orientation of the ballpark means the sun tracks behind the third base line into the later afternoon. This makes third base the spot to be for shade.

The Third Base Side Is Best For Shade

For the most comfortable experience during a summer game in the Lehigh Valley, prioritize the third base line.

  • Sections 110 – 117: These sections starting behind home plate are pretty reliable for shade. Just stick to the higher rows as the front part of these sections will still get hit by the sun until at least the middle innings.
  • Sections 208 – 212: These sections are even more reliable as they are higher up into the structure of the stadium.
  • 300-Level Suites: Suites will obviously provide the most consistent shade and often include access to climate-controlled areas.

Late Afternoon And Evening

Because the stadium is oriented Northeast, the sun begins the day behind the right field area and tracks behind the grandstands toward the third base side.

This ensures the third base side becomes the primary shield against the sun as the game progresses. By the middle innings of an evening game, the shadow from the grandstand will have covered the entire infield, but fans in the Capital BlueCross Lawn and the Bacon Strip in right field should expect direct sunlight for the first few innings.
