What You Need to Know About Shade at Constellation Field
Located in Sugar Land, Texas, Constellation Field is the home of the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros).
The ballpark is a standout in the Pacific Coast League, featuring a unique Texas-shaped scoreboard and a splash pad in the outfield for families to cool off during the humid Texas summer.
Unlike many other stadiums, Constellation Field’s southeast orientation means the sun tracks behind the first base side in the early afternoon, making it the place to be for fans looking to avoid the intense Texas sun.

Stick to the First Base Side
For the best experience during a day or twilight game in the Texas heat, prioritize the first base side of the stadium. This is also where the Cowboys’ dugout is located, which is an extra bonus!
- Sections 3 – 11: The upper rows of these sections on the first base line move into the shade much earlier than the rest of the park, providing relief during the hottest parts of the day.
- Sections 12 – 15: This is behind home plate, which gets the added protection of the suites and club level seating above.
- Luxury Suites: If you want more of an elevated experience, The luxury suites on both the third and first base side offer climate-controlled skyboxes with padded balcony seats.
-
Early Protection: Sections 1 – 12 on the first base line move into the shade much earlier than the rest of the park, providing relief during the hottest parts of the day.
-
Climate Control: If you select seats in the Insperity Club level, you have the option to step into the AC if the humidity becomes too intense.
- Regions Bank Club: Located directly behind home plate, this is another air conditioned space to enjoy the Cowboys. A ticket here also includes a buffet!
If you need a place to cool off, the Red Diamond Splash Pad located in center field includes water features and fountains available throughout the game.
Shade in the Late Afternoon and Evenings
As the sun continues its westward path, the shadow from the main grandstand steadily expands across the infield.
By the middle innings of an evening game, the first base side is fully protected, while the third base side and H-E-B Picnic Plaza in the outfield may still catch the last bits of direct sunlight and glare.
The stadium’s orientation ensures that the home side of the bowl is the first to experience the “golden hour” without the physical heat of direct solar exposure.
