What You Need to Know About Shade at ESL Ballpark

Located in downtown Rochester, New York, ESL Ballpark, formerly Innovative Field, is the home of the Rochester Red Wings, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Opened in 1996 as Frontier Field, the ballpark is known for its high-energy atmosphere and local food favorites like the Garbage Plate.

The stadium’s Northeast orientation and overall design utilizes elevated suites and a significant roof overhang to help fans stay comfortable during the humid upstate New York summer.

Any Covered Seat is Good for Shade

For the most comfortable experience during a summer game in Rochester, prioritize covered seating in the 200 sections. The roof provides shade throughout these sections on both sides of the field

  • 200-Level Sections: The upper rows in these sections should give you reprieve throughout the entire afternoon and into the evening. This includes both third and first base. Sections 226 and 227 in particular on third base has a larger overhang where you can utilize more of the section.
  • Sections 113 – 119: These sections closer to the field are behind home plate. Stick to the upper rows for better shade opportunities.
  • Sections 119 – 130: If there are no other options, sticking to third base is better for shade.

Late Afternoon And Evening

Because the stadium is oriented toward the northeast, the sun begins the day over the right-field area and tracks behind the grandstands toward the third base side.

This ensures the third base side becomes the primary shield against the sun as the game progresses. By the middle innings of an evening game, the shadow from the grandstand will have covered the entire infield, but fans in in left and right field should expect direct sunlight for the first few innings.
