What You Need to Know About Shade at Gwinnett Field

Located in Lawrenceville, Georgia, Gwinnett Field (formerly Coolray Field) is the home of the Gwinnett Stripers, the Triple-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. The ballpark is known for its open-air design and fan-friendly features like The Berm in the outfield.

The southeast orientation of the ballpark means the sun tracks behind the third base line in the afternoon and dips behind home plate in the evening.

Because of the intense Georgia summer heat, many frequent visitors prioritize the first base side or the high rows behind home plate to stay comfortable during the game.

Stick to the First Base Side For More Shade

For the best experience during a hot Georgia day or twilight game, prioritize the first base side of the ballpark.

  • Odd Numbered Sections 103 – 113: During early afternoon and evening games, these seats on the first base sideline will see shade sooner than the third base line. Stick to the upper rows to get protection from the roofing structure
  • Sections 100 – 102: These sections behind home plate will also get protection from the press box and the Coca-Cola Front Porch
  • Suites 1 – 19: If you have larger groups, each suite has a climate-controlled area as well as outdoor seating to get a better view of the Stripers.

Late Afternoon and Evening Sun

Because the stadium is oriented toward the southeast, the sun begins the day behind the first base stands and tracks over the stadium, eventually setting behind the third base grandstand.

This ensures that the first base side becomes the primary shield against the sun as the game progresses. By the middle of an evening game, the shadow from the grandstand will have covered the infield, but fans in the the berm in the outfield should still expect direct sun for the first few innings.
