What You Need to Know About Shade at Huntington Bank Field

Located right on the shore of Lake Erie in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, Huntington Bank Field is the open-air home of the Cleveland Browns. Originally opened in 1999 on the historic site of Cleveland Stadium, the venue features an open architecture design that purposefully lets in scenic views of the harbor and the city skyline.

The stadium’s northeast diagonal layout means the sun starts high over the south sideline before shifting behind the west end zone. This makes early September kickoffs require fans to carefully target the overhanging canopy roof or the south press box shadow to stay cool.

The South Sideline and West End Zone Are Best For Shade

During the afternoon kickoff, the sun tracks behind the home side toward the evening. Because of this, you want to prioritize the south sideline and west end zone for first dibs in the sun.

South Sideline

• Sections 102 – 115: The highest rows of the lower home bowl sit directly underneath the club level deck framework, escaping the midday sun earliest.

• Sections 301 – 316 (Club Level): Located on the South sideline, these mid-tier seats keep the sun behind you and offer immediate access to indoor, climate-controlled club lounges.

• Sections 501 – 516:  These upper-deck sections on the South side offer the most reliable shade across the seasons, with the highest rows sitting safely beneath the stadium’s overhanging roof canopy.

West End Zone

• Sections 144 – 149: The upper rows of these sections are covered by the structural deck overhang above, providing early protection from the sun.

• Sections 343 – 350: The back rows of this West mezzanine level catch structural stadium shade quickly as the afternoon moves forward.

 

Late Afternoon And Evening Games

As a 1:00 PM game crosses into the 4th quarter or a late afternoon 4:25 PM game kicks off, the sun sinks low towards the western horizon. The shadow cast by the massive west grandstand stretches directly across the playing field, completely blanketing the west end zone and moving its way across the lower bowl

As sunset approaches, the sun drops directly behind the closed northwest corner, finally bringing welcome relief to the upper rows on that side.

Meanwhile, the east end zone and the upper tiers of the northeast deck remain intensely exposed to the final rays of the day, making a solid pair of sunglasses absolutely critical.
