What You Need to Know About Shade at Mercedes-Benz Stadium
World Cup 2026
Mercedes-Benz Stadium will host eight matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Because many games are scheduled during daytime and early evening hours, sun exposure can be a factor for fans seated in open sections.
While FIFA may implement cooling breaks during hotter matches, shaded and covered seating can still make a noticeable difference in comfort throughout the game.
Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a world-class sports and entertainment venue located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, Georgia. Serving as the home for both the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and MLS’s Atlanta United, this stadium is famous for its iconic “pinwheel” retractable roof and the massive 360-degree halo board that circles the top of the interior.
The stadium was designed to provide an elite fan experience, featuring wide concourses and floor-to-ceiling windows in the “Window to the City” end zone that offers views of the Atlanta skyline. However, because it is a retractable-roof stadium, the atmosphere inside can change quickly.
When the roof is open on a sunny Georgia afternoon, the seating bowl becomes subject to the path of the sun, making section choice a vital part of your game-day planning.
How Shade Moves During the Day
Even with its high-tech roof, Mercedes-Benz Stadium follows the basic rules of solar tracking. The stadium is oriented east-west and the sun typically passes over the south side of the structure.
During a 1:00 PM kickoff, if the roof is open, the sun sits high and slightly to the south. This creates a large shadow that covers the south sideline (the home side) almost immediately.
As the afternoon moves toward 4:00 PM, the sun tracks west, causing the shadow to stretch further across the field. The north sideline and the eastern end zone are the “hot zones,” often remaining in direct sunlight and facing a harsh glare from the sun reflecting off the field and the interior structures.
Stick to the South (Falcons) Side
When the roof is open and the Atlanta humidity is in full swing, these are the top spots to find cover:
-
The South Sideline (Sections 106 – 114 and 201 – 219): This side of the field is your safest bet. Because the sun stays “behind” the roof structure on this side, these fans are usually shielded from direct rays for the entire game. Stick to the upper rows for guaranteed shade from the start.
-
Upper Sections 301 – 322: While the upper deck can sometimes feel closer to the sun, the south-side sections are actually positioned under the fixed portion of the roof. This means you get the breeze from the open roof without the direct heat.
The Afternoon and Evening Shade
One of the most beautiful features of the stadium is the massive glass wall in the north end zone. While it provides a stunning view of the city, it can also act as a greenhouse during late afternoon games.
If the sun is hitting that glass at the right angle, the glare can be intense for anyone sitting in the opposite end zone. Stick to the south side to ensure the sun stays at your back and out of your eyes during the afternoon and into the evening
