What You Need to Know About Shade at MetLife Stadium
World Cup 2026
MetLife Stadium will host eight matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including the Final! Because many games are scheduled during daytime and early evening hours, sun exposure can be a factor for fans seated in open sections.
While FIFA may implement cooling breaks during hotter matches, shaded and covered seating can still make a noticeable difference in comfort throughout the game.
MetLife Stadium is a massive, open-air bowl. Unlike older stadiums that had massive cantilevered roofs, MetLife’s design is relatively open, meaning “natural” shade is a luxury.
Without a large canopy to provide relief, the “concrete jungle” effect is real.
If you are heading to a Giants or Jets game during those brutal early-season 1:00 PM starts, your seating choice will determine whether you’re watching the game or shielding your eyes for three hours.
How Shade Moves During the Day
Understanding the sun’s path at MetLife is the key to staying comfortable. The stadium is oriented roughly North-South (little more Northwest). For a standard 1:00 PM game, the sun begins high over the east sideline (the home side). As the afternoon progresses, the sun moves behind the west side of the stadium (the visitor side). This means that by the second quarter, the stadium’s own structure begins to cast a shadow over the west stands. Conversely, the east sideline and the north end zone act as a “sun catcher,” receiving direct light and heat until the sun finally dips low enough in the evening to be blocked by the stadium’s rim.

The Best Sections for Shade: Stick to The South and West Ends of the Stadium
If you want to avoid the glare and the heat, you need to target specific “protection zones” where the stadium architecture works in your favor:
-
Lower Field Sections 121 – 142: This is the gold standard for shade. Because the sun sets behind this side of the stadium, these fans are the first to get relief. By halftime, a large portion of the lower and middle tiers on this side are fully shaded.
-
Both A & B Sections of 221- 231: These are arguably the most protected seats in the house. Located deep under the upper deck, these sections are shielded from both the sun and potential rain.
-
Sections 321 – 344: Most people assume the upper deck is a sun-trap, and they are usually right. however, the very top of MetLife features a “solar ring” overhang. If you sit in the highest rows of the 300 level on the west side, this ring provides enough shadow to keep you out of the direct sun.
The Late Afternoon Glare
For the 4:05 PM or 4:25 PM late windows, the sun is lower and much more aggressive for anyone facing west. The glare off the turf can make it nearly impossible to follow the ball. During these late starts, the south end zone is a hidden gem, as the sun is positioned in a way that keeps the light out of your eyes while the stadium shadows stretch across the field.
