What You Need to Know About Shade at PNC Park

PNC Park is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful ballparks in baseball thanks to its dramatic skyline views and intimate two-deck design.

Unlike many stadiums with deep upper roofs, most of the shade here comes from structural overhangs and shadows cast by the upper decks rather than built-in roof covers. That means shade is often row-dependent, with the back rows of sections that sit beneath higher seating far more comfortable on hot, sunny days.

Sun Movement and Shade at PNC Park

Because PNC Park faces roughly Southeast, the sun begins its path over centerfield and sweeps across the lower bowl toward first base. During early innings of 1:35 PM or 12:35 PM starts, much of the third-base line and left field seats stay in direct sun. The higher rows in sections on the first-base side or under upper decks will get shade earlier in the game.

Lower bowl seats down the third-base line and in left field see sunlight through much of afternoon games and aren’t reliably shaded until late in the game. These areas offer excellent views and great skyline sightlines, but you’ll be in the sun for longer compared with the 1st base side and higher rows.

Look for Seats in These Sections on 1st Base

  • Sections101 – 115 Upper Rows: These seats near the first-base side benefit from being under the upper deck when the sun is high. Choosing rows toward the back of the section (double letters) significantly increases shade time during afternoon games.

  • Sections 201 – 214 (Upper Rows): The 200-level is elevated and partially sheltered by the deck above, making upper rows in these sections a good place to escape direct sun, especially later in the afternoon.

  • Upper Deck Sections 301 – 315: The highest seating tier and back rows in the Grandstand offer shade earlier in afternoon games because they’re deeper under structural coverage. These are among the rare seats at PNC that stay shaded for much of a day game.

Evening Games and Shade

Evening games are generally much more comfortable shade-wise. It’s also a time to take advantage of the beautiful view of downtown Pittsburgh!

As the sun dips toward the horizon, shadows extend quickly from the upper decks into the lower bowl, often leaving most field level and club seats shaded by later innings.

The first-base side still tends to gain shade earlier, but by mid-evening, many seats across the stadium are shaded.
