What You Need to Know About Shade at Providence Park

Located in the Goose Hollow neighborhood of Portland, Providence Park is the home of the Portland Timbers (MLS) and Portland Thorns (NWSL).

The stadium is oriented with the pitch running Northeast, and because it is nestled into a dense urban block with a very tall western grandstand, the sun disappears behind the West side relatively early in the afternoon.

As the sun tracks from East to West, the lower East sideline and the South end remain exposed to the light and glare longest, while the massive roof structures on the west and north sides provide a reliable “shadow anchor” for fans.

The West Sideline is Best for Shade

For fans who want to avoid the intensity of a summer afternoon, the West side of the stadium is the go-to spot.

  • Sections 109 – 123: The lower bowl on the west side transitions into total shade by mid-afternoon, making it a prime spot for standard 1:30 PM or 4:00 PM starts.
  • The Terrace Advantage: Sections 215 – 223 are elevated and deep under the historic wooden roof, ensuring you are shielded from the sun well before kickoff.

  • Timbers Army Protection: If you are in the General Admission sections (203 – 208 and 103 – 108), aim for the higher rows to stay under the North end’s deep roof overhang.

  • TR 1 -9, ET 1 – 9, & EV 1 – 9: Unlike many stadiums where the east side is a “sun trap,” Providence Park’s newer additions like East Vista, Tanner Ridge and the Toyota Terrace provide shaded seating due to their high-profile overhead covers.

Late Afternoon and Evening

As the match progresses into the late afternoon, the shadow from the west grandstand stretches fully across the pitch, eventually climbing up the east stands. Sections 109 – 123 should be fully in the shade by this point.

By an evening kickoff, almost the entire stadium bowl is in shade, though the lower rows of the East sideline may still experience the final bits of glare and heat.

Because of Portland’s northern latitude, summer sunsets are late, but the stadium’s high walls and extensive roofing mean that the “sun-in-eyes” factor is mitigated much earlier than at more open, modern venues.
