What You Need to Know About Shade at Rate Field
Rate Field, the home of the White Sox on Chicago’s South Side, is a classic bowl with lots of character and history. Built as the successor to the original Comiskey Park, it’s known for its open feel, massive scoreboards, and an atmosphere where baseball feels like a summer tradition.
On sunny afternoons, outfield seats and parts of the lower bowl bake in sunlight, and fans not paying attention to their seat choice can end up squinting and sweating for innings. That’s where smart seat selection comes in. Understanding how the sun tracks and which overhangs help block rays makes all the difference in avoiding sunburn and staying comfortable.
Stick to 1st Base
The first base side is your best bet for shade during afternoon and early evening games. Due to Rate Field’s Southeast positioning, the sun is high over right field and first base. As the game progresses, shadows from the overhang and upper deck begin to cover seats along the first-base line and behind home plate first, while sections down the third-base line and in left field stay in the sun much longer.
Many White Sox games start in the early afternoon (around 1:10 PM), when the sun is still high and nearly overhead. During these times, only seats under the overhang or high up in the 500 level will see significant shade early. As the afternoon progresses, shadows gradually move from the upper levels down toward the field, giving first base and behind-home plate seating the best chance at relief before later innings.
The Best Sections for Shade
Unlike some stadiums where shade is everywhere, Guaranteed Rate Field has specific zones where structural coverage matters:
- Section 110 – 129: These seats are right under the club/200-level overhang. In afternoon games, the upper rows (roughly row 20 and above) start shaded early, making them some of the most comfortable lower-bowl seats for hot days.
- Club Level Sections 220 – 230: This is one of the most consistently shaded areas if the sun is open. The overhang from the 300/club level keeps these seats out of direct sun the longest during day games.
- Club Level Sections 310 – 330: While this level isn’t shaded the entire game, many rows toward the back benefit from the roof overhang later in the afternoon. Plus, club access gives indoor spaces to retreat to if sun or heat becomes too intense.
- Sections 509 – 529 & 530 – 544: The upper deck has significant overhang toward the back rows that can provide shade during much of a day game, especially later innings. These seats are among the most shaded in the stadium overall, though they’re farther from the field. You can start to creep on the first-base side in the 540s, but try and stay near the top to get the shade from the overhang
What to Avoid for Shade
Outfield seats, especially down the left field line and in left field, are almost always in the sun during afternoon games and are among the hottest seats in the park. The outfield lower bowl in particular gets strong sun for most of the game, and shade doesn’t arrive until well into the late innings, if at all.
