Located in the Mission Valley neighborhood of San Diego, California, Snapdragon Stadium is a 35,000-seat open-air venue that opened in 2022. It serves as the home for San Diego State Aztecs football (NCAA), San Diego FC (MLS), and San Diego Wave FC (NWSL).

Built on the site of the former San Diego Stadium (Qualcomm Stadium), the facility features an intimate seating bowl with great sightlines but very minimal weather protection. Because Southern California weather brings intense sunshine year-round, preparing for sun exposure is essential for anyone attending a daytime event here.

The West Sideline Is Best For Shade (If You Can Find It!)

With the lack of canopies or a roof overhang, shaded seats are a rarity in the early afternoon. The north-so-south orientation of the stadium means the sun tracks behind the west side toward the evening. Because of this, you want to prioritize the west sideline so the sun will be behind you as the day progresses.

• Sections 123 – 133: Opting for these lower bowl sections ensures you will step into natural stadium shadows by mid-afternoon, though picking rows farther back gives you a slight head start on the shade. Note: 124 – 132 are Cox Business Club seats which will be more expensive. Only 123 and 133 are “standard” seating

• Sections 323 – 333: These upper concourse seats keeps the sun completely behind you from late afternoon into the evening.

Late Afternoon And Evening

As an afternoon match shifts into the final whistle, the shadow from the western grandstand extends deeply across the playing surface. The entire west side and both end zones fall completely into cool shade, creating a much more comfortable environment.

Meanwhile, the east sideline continues to experience heavy, direct exposure, forcing spectators on the visitor side to deal with a blinding horizontal glare until the sun drops completely below the horizon.
