What You Need to Know About Shade at Truist Park
Atlanta summers are no joke. High humidity, intense sun, and long afternoon games can turn Truist Park into an oven if you pick the wrong seat. Many fans learn the hard way that not all sections offer relief from the heat.
Whether you’re attending a 1:35 PM weekday game or a late afternoon weekend matchup, here’s a practical, fan-tested guide to finding shade and staying comfortable at a Braves game.
Stay Near 1st Base & Behind Home Plate
Because of the stadium’s southeast orientation, the sun tracks across the third-base side and right field for most of the afternoon. Fans along the third-base line and in right field are exposed to direct sunlight well into the game, especially during day starts. Meanwhile, the first-base side benefits from the stadium’s structure and overhangs, allowing shade to arrive earlier and last longer.
For day games, choosing the first-base side dramatically improves your odds of staying out of the sun. Specifically, look for these sections:
-
The 400 Level (Sections 412–425): The grandstands are the most reliable shade in the entire stadium. The upper deck roof covers most seats, keeping fans shaded for nearly the entire game regardless of start time. While the most 400-level seats are covered by the roof, if guaranteed shade is your priority, stick to the first-base side.
-
300-Level First-Base Side (Upper Rows): These seats strike a great balance between view and comfort. Sitting farther back places you under the overhang, with shade arriving early in afternoon games. Lower rows can still see sun early, so row depth matters.
-
100 & 200 Level First-Base Side (Back Half of Sections): Field-level seats closer to the action are exposed, but moving up into higher rows provides protection from the deck above. Front rows will still see sun exposure well into the game.
-
Behind Home Plate (Diamond / Executive, Upper Rows): While premium-priced, the back half of these sections benefits from overhang shade and offers protection even during early starts. This is one of the few areas near home plate where shade is realistic.
The Late Afternoon “False Comfort” Trap
A common mistake at Truist Park is assuming that a late afternoon or early evening start means shade will come quickly. In reality, the sun remains intense for several innings, especially on the third-base side and in right field.
Even as the sun lowers, glare can become an issue, and heat lingers until well after sunset. Fans on the first-base side experience relief much sooner, while those on the opposite side often sit in direct sunlight far longer than expected.
Choosing the right side of the park can mean the difference between enjoying the game and counting down the innings.
